Getting what I want

Since -98 I’ve been using Linux. It started at school where all of our programming was done in Red Hat 5.1 and KDE. Off and on I have returned to Microsoft Windows, I have used alot of different distributions such as Gentoo, Debian, Mandrake, Suse and Slackware to name a few. I in a weak moment back in 2001 I think it was, I even installed qnx. I also have tried several windowmanagers and desktops including Gnome, Fluxbox, Enlightenment, Ion etc.

So, why did I do all of this? Well, I didn’t feel that I had found the right set of software that suited me. They were all great in their own way, but had some smaller shortcomings that I didn’t like. Until now.

The Ubuntu Linux distribution has given me just the right balance and mix that suits me. When I think about it it’s hard to put a finger on exactly what it is. I guess it’s the super easy installation integrated on the live CD, the super clean Gnome interface, just the right tools included in the software repositories and a user forum that is great in both searchability and friendliness. Theese are the things that pop out of my head, I’m sure that there are more reasons that I can’t think of right now though.

Bottomline is this. If you are, like I was, looking for something different from what you use today and you are not completely satisfied, give Ubuntu a try. You wont be sorry. I even encourage beginners to try Ubuntu, run the Live CD first completely without installing, and see that using Free Software isn’t some kind of ”dark magic” anymore.

Oh, and I almost forgot. I have put up my own Ubuntu section here on GDC. I’ll post resources and tips on using Ubuntu there. It’s a section I hope will grow as time passes. You can find the link to the page in the menu on the right.
