Ubuntu 9.10 ”Karmic Koala” is out

Woot! It’s finally arrived and it’s looking very promising! There are some very nice features in this one that I’m really looking forward to trying out. Here’s a short list of some of the news:

  • New instant messaging client/framework. Empathy replaces Pidgins for instant messaging (as the default app, Pidgin will still be available of course) and ushering in a more integrated environment for message handling.
  • Out-of-the-box integration with Ubuntu One, a free 2GB online storage repository for safe off-site backup and syncronization of your documents. That’s nice! :)
  • A new ”Software center” to make installing and choosing applications even easier than before. Lets face it, Synaptic wasn’t really that hard was it?
  • A brand new boot system allowing full X stack at bootup making the wait much more pleasant. Not really a utility feature but nice nonetheless.
  • Revamped Netbook Edition that I can’t wait to try out on the old craptop at home.

There’s a lot more than this short list so if you havn’t checked it out yet I suggest you head over to www.ubuntu.com and download it.

Enjoy! (I know I will :))
